The project is built around two main threads: a genealogical investigation into the traces of my ancestors in Istanbul and Anatolia, and a contemporary inquiry into Armenians living in Istanbul today, composed of portraits and interviews. Inkjet prints, 60x70cm &nbsp; &nbsp; Between 1923 and 1926, an Armenian orphanage was opened in the village of Strunga, Romania, to host kids orphaned by the Armenian genocide. For the lack of funds and the diminishing number of orphans, the orphanage had to close. The buildings disappeared and the memory slowly got forgotten, if not for a few individuals trying to revive its memory. &nbsp; &nbsp; “In the footsteps of... What photographer hasn't at some point in his or her career taken a retrospective look at a particular object, close, too close? The danger of looking back is one that Lot knew the hard way, that nostalgia, that feeling of irrelevance that can turn you into a statue of salt. Rebecca Topakian, by patiently researching fragments of the history of the Armenian orphanage in Strunga, is certainly seeking to consolidate her identity, but she also wants to abandon herself to the chance of new perspectives. &nbsp; &nbsp; Fragments of architecture attest to a presence, the testimonies that underpin it. These fragments, trapped by nature, are nourished by the wandering souls of these orphans. This great Whole regenerates the passage of children to inscribe them in its history. They were here, they are still here! Not as ghosts, but as food for the living. &nbsp; &nbsp; Rebecca Topakian had a choice between two attitudes: one that minimises everything, to ward off her demons, or one that aesthetises. It's not so easy to be just right. Because we mustn't overdo the banal and the beautiful. &nbsp; &nbsp; From the sadness of the genocide to the emigration routes that lead to Strunga, the journey is long and, of course, hazardous. It's hard not to get lost, because what's left to see but the little white pebbles that history has left behind. &nbsp; &nbsp; Rebecca Topakian has simply taken care to fit together a few images, Vordan Karmir is a collaborative work on the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) war. The artists transform the traumatic images of violence against Armenians, deliberately disseminated by Azerbaijani soldiers on social media as psychological warfare and sent directly to the artists, through a glitch process to reduce their traumatic impact. The created carpet incorporates three glitch medallions and patterns referring to elements of the war, woven with ancestral techniques and a unique pigment derived from cochineal, replacing the historic "vordan karmir" pigment, the red cochineal of the Ararat valley, which is endangered. This collective weaving metaphorizes the ethnic cleansing suffered by the Armenians of Artsakh and operates a collective transformation of trauma. With the support of Armenian Art Foundation,&nbsp;Compagnia di San Paulo and ACSL residency. For Dame Gulizar and Other Love Stories, Rebecca Topakian’s starting point is the unique story of her Armenian family, who lived in Turkey before her grandfather emigrated to France. This story is the love of her great-grandparents – Garabed and Gulizar –forbidden by their parents, until the kidnapping of Gulizar by Garabed, who came for her on his horse to take her to Constantinople. Topakian explored this part of her identity by choosing fiction and mythology. Bearing the love story of her ancestors in mind while she traveled and lived in Armenia, desire became the thread of this work: it is a desire for earth, ground, identity, but also for the other’s body acting almost as a mirror. Following the ambiguity of the kidnapping of her great-grandmother, she also questions the ambiguity of her armenian identity as a woman : in between desire and the strong patriarchy showing itself even in the landscapes. She printed her family archive pictures, through an analog process, on the surface of local stones that she found while walking in the Armenian mountains. It is a way of symbolically putting her ancestors back to the land they belong to, after they were all separated by exile.&nbsp; <img width="2048" height="1650" width_o="2048" height_o="1650" of stones (tuf, black obsidian, red obsidian, volcanic glass) Rebecca Topakian gathered stones that are symbolic of Armenia: tuf (which is used in construction), black, red and brown obsidian (which is very present in the Armenian landscape , and glass from Lake Sevan. She analogically printed, in the darkroom, her own family archive pictures on the surface of the stones. Imported mid 20s century in France to decorate homes with their exotic features, some 30 rose-ringed parakeets escaped from Orly airport in 1974. Since then, they breeded and invaded the parisian sky. While some say they are an inviding species that should be stopped, researchers found out they are not threatening to the parisian urban ecosystem and that they are just like any other big bird. A parallel could be drawn between these birds and post-colonial trajectories : this species, enjoyed precisely for its exoticism, was loved when in cages, and seen as a threat when freed. Topakian studied the vocabulary around the descriptions of the bird and realized it matches a racist vocabulary : each print has a sentence silk-printed on it, found on Internet, in which a disturbing ambivalence makes it uneasy for the viewer to understand if we are talking about birds or humans. While the human territory is based on borders and property, nature finds no interest in these human conceptions. Jericho, called the City of the Moon, said the most ancient city in the world, shows many historical layers, from mesolithic sites to modern ruins. Jericho takes its name from the Arabic word «Ariha», fragrance, or the canaanite god «Yareakh» - god of cyclic rebirth, who allows the morning dew to deliver the perfume of the trees. Continously destroyed and rebuilt from biblical times to the nowadays occupation, Jericho bears some post-apocalyptic looks with its ruins of each time - making us feel like we were archaeologists from the future. Jericho is known as the city of the moon. Its arabic name, Ariha, could have its origin in the name of the Canaanite moon god Yarikh, which is the provider of the dew, enabling the orchards to bloom in the desert - the moon operates as a symbol of life and renewal. Ariha refers both to the flagrance and to the moon god. However, the casino's operation was cut short in 2000 when the Second Intifada began, leading to air and ground attacks that forced its closure after only two years. The mosaic, created under the guidance of Mohamad Khashroom at the Mosaic Center of Jericho, emulates the style of antique mosaics found throughout Jericho. Topakian used a digital transformed camera so it is sensitive to infrared. In the pitch-black darkness of dance parties, she sheds light on her subjects by using infrared lighting, which is invisible to the human eye. Aking to a spy or a hunter, she lies waiting for moments of abandonment in the dancers.
